Sometimes the hardest thing to do is… START. You may have many great ideas, but no idea where to begin or how to get the ball rolling. This doesn’t only apply to starting a new business or part time job. Many times we struggle to get started doing simple chores at home, but once we’ve gotten out of those starting blocks, the journey or the task at hand seems to become easier to continue. I’d like to encourage you: Don’t let the enormity of your dreams or the vision that you have deter you from beginning the journey.
The Habits of Successful People
One of my favourite excercises is spending time everyday on mindset training. It is an important part of my life because this it how a simple idea, thought about and grasped, can change your life.
I recently became interested in Richard Branson’s life and the stories behind his success. You have to agree that someone who has started over 400 companies in just under 50 years must have something to teach us. He does in his book, “Like A Virgin… Secrets They Won’t Teach You at Business School”.
Here’s one of my favourite quotes from Richard Branson that has inspired me whenever I am faced with a challenge.
If someone offers you an opportunity and you’re not sure you can do it, say “Yes” and learn how to do it later.
Richard Branson is very down to earth and his staff even have a name for him. It is “Dr. YES”. Notably one picks up that he lives out what he writes. He is action oriented.
Here are some points from his book.
Believe it Can be Done
Live Life to the Full
Never Give Up
Have Faith in Yourself
Help Each Other
When most people are coming up with excuses that the time isn’t right or they don’t have the money, Branson just gets started. He figures out how to take the first step – even if it sounds outrageous. Branson is an extreme example but we can learn from him.
So here’s the deal – Starting is sometimes the hardest thing to do, but to summarise, successful people tend to start before they feel ready. The truth is that people like Branson perfect their journey along the way.
We all start in the same place: no money, no resources, no contacts, no experience. The difference is that some people — the winners — choose to start anyway. Robert Kiyosaki is another of my favourite authors and his story’s ring to the same tune.
Start Now. Put one foot in the front the other and start moving. Like a snow ball rolling down a hill, the more it rolls, the more it picks up speed, the larger it gets, and it begins encompassing all it comes in contact with. Imagine jump-starting a vehicle. It’s difficult pushing it, 2 tons of dead weight, immobile, at a standstill. As hard as it may be initially, you rock and the vehicle begins to rock, the tires start turning, and inch by inch, you’re pushing forward, moving steadily. Eventually, you pick up a little momentum, a little more speed, enough to hop in, drop the clutch, and off you go.
It’s no different when pursuing your dreams and aspirations. It may seem like an insurmountable task at first, and enormous hill to climb, but the only way to achieve the dream is to START. Get moving, build your momentum, and enjoy the ride.
You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great. ~ Zig Ziglar
No matter where you are in the world and regardless of what you’re working on, I hope you’ll start before you feel ready because starting is sometimes the hardest thing to do.
